The great Abbey Lincoln returns with It's
Me, a very stately, subdued collection of jazz standards
and her own original compositions. Featuring her wonderful combo
of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Jaz
Sawyer, Lincoln brings a touch of class and austerity to tracks
like Carmichael and Mercer's Skylark, Cedar Walton's The Maestro,
and her own works such as "They Call It Jazz" and "Can
You Dig It.". "It's Me O Lord, Standing in the Need
of Prayer" deviates slightly from the smooth jazz sounds
by sounding very soulful and gospel. Lincoln's phrasing is reminiscent
of Billie Holiday's; her vocalizing is rich and deep without
resorting to diva histrionics. You want to listen to an elegant
jazz album with essence--step up to Ms Lincoln.
