Sad Girl

Amy Allison follows up The Maudlin Years
with another gem, in the good old traditional country vein (with
a little ironic and sarcastic twist). For someone who is the
daughter of a venerable jazz pianist legend and being also from
Long Island, Allison sounds more country than today's Nashville
artists themselves. Lyrically you pretty much know where she
is coming from in matters of the heart like on "Listless
and Lonesome," "Sad State of Affairs," and "Do
I Miss You?" Yet on the gentle Pasty Cline-like title track,
you can't tell whether she is being serious or self-deprecating,
which makes it the more interesting; on the other hand "Shadow
of a Man" is not an exercise in self-pity but rather an
upbeat rocker and clever put-down. Allison sings with a distinctive
nasally yet expressive voice. Sad Girl is the perfect
blend of serious introspection and a sense of humor--however
you interpret it, it's good soul affirming alt country.
