Andy Bell's first solo album thankfully does not rehash the singer's
work in Erasure but rather furthers his love for club and electronic
music. Electric Blue has a more pronounced club-pumping
Hi-NRG sound more in the vein of electro pioneers like Giorgio
Moroder. It can be hard not to get caught up with the frenzy
caused by beat-heavy tunes like "Crazy," "Jealous,"
and the quirky "I Thought It Was You" (a duet with
Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears). Some of the other tunes
break up the dominant dance sound like the retro-sounding "Shaking
My Soul" and the lovely album-closing ballad "The Rest
of Our Lives." Bell is still electropop's flamboyant leading
diva with his amazing vocal range that meshes with his heartfelt,
kitchen sink drama lyrics. Not to say this album signals the
end of erasure but just another phase in the vocalist's career.
