Bill Hicks
Live (DVD)
Ryko
by Kennedy Weible

This DVD is a plethora of Hicks' punishing, enlightening, and hilarious stand-up. Bill Hicks died in 1994 at age 32, from cancer. He had his material plagiarized by numerous comedians, most notably Denis Leary, and he kept a sadistic tour regiment, playing between 250 and 300 gigs a year. Hicks wanted his stand-up to be more than a comedy routine; he saw it as the ultimate art form, the interaction of the philosopher and the students. The DVD has three of Hicks shows: one from the Old Vic Theatre in Chicoga (30 min), one from the Montreal Comedy Festival (70 min), and one from the Dominion Theatre in London (70 min). There's also a forty-five minute bonus documentary of Bill's family and contemporaries talking about him, spliced with segments from some early shows that aren't on the DVD. That's a lot of Hicks.
