The title of the record betrays the music,
Diana Darby's latest is stark and mellow, but lush and gentle
too. Fanstasia Ball evokes a dream-like atmosphere dominated
by acoustic guitar and Darby's wistful voice (reminiscent of
Patti Smith in a reflective mode). There is a sense of detachment
and isolation in her lyrics as is the case of "The Only
One Who's Listening," where she is reduced singing in a
whisper; "Happy" is not exactly that but introspective
and aching; "Caroline" recalls the Velvet Underground
and '60s pop in Darby's character study. Fantasia Ball
is a moving work, not easy to take at first but satisfying in
the end.
