Although the polish of her latest album might veer into that direction, hopefully Deana Carter's won't make the pop crossover like her female country colleagues. Yeah, I'm Just a Girl (not the No Doubt song) benefits from using veteran producer Dann Huff and the songs are pop friendly, but it still maintains Carter's country roots. There are upbeat, quirky moments and occasionally some really affecting ones, particularly the ballads. Best tracks here are the title track, the ironic but cute "Cover of a Magazine," the pleasant "Twice as Worth It," and "Goodbye Train." Carter sings her songs with an earthiness that sets her apart from her diva-driven peers. I'm Just a Girl is a modest-sounding reaction to Nashville's overly slick sound.
