Female rockers in the late '80s were almost
nonexistent until Melissa Etheridge came along. With a voice
modeled after Janis Joplin, Etheridge infused a sense of grit
and passion in her hard-bitten tunes of relationship trials.
it's an approach that permeated all through her albums; the seed
was planted on this first one. You can say now that Melissa
Etheridge is a classic record containing some of her well-known
songs including "Bring Me Some Water," the powerful
"Similar Features", and the butt-kicking "Like
the Way I Do" (which that song and the album got an afterlife
when Etheridge's career peaked in 1994 with her fourth album
Yes I Am). This special edition contains a second disc of a live
performance at the Roxy in 1988, reprising nearly all of the
album's cuts plus solo acoustic performance for BBC Radio. They
are proof of what a great live performer she was and still is.
An underrated album upon its original release 15 years ago, Melissa
Etheridge deserves another listen for those who want to know
how she got to where she is today.
