The comparisons to that other Canadian
pop star (first name starts with A, last name begins with L)
is a given. Dobson has a voice more tailored for rock than pop,
and the songs on her self-titled album are mostly guitar-rock
oriented, save for the slick production. While the tunes are
short of originality and verges on Avril/Liz Phair territory,
the album has some spirited songs like "Bye Bye Boyfriend,"
"Rock It Til You Drop It," and "Stupid Little
Things." A few of the obligatory reflective songs like Everything
is also here, as if to show Dobson can belt a ballad once in
a while. The singer has spunk and attitude that are noteworthy
attributes; it'll be while if they are enough to sustain a career.
