Just because you record your album in Memphis, known for its historical importance as the center of soul music, doesn't necessarily brings forth credibility as a soul musician a la Booker T. and the M.G.s and Rufus Thomas. Still, actor Peter Gallagher, best known as everyone's favorite dad on The O.C. does turn in somewhat of a decent performance on this album, mainly familiar cover songs, which doesn't sound like an overblown vanity project. Rather, it does sound like the work of someone who is genuinely interested in the distinct history and sound of the city. While his vocals doesn't reveal a soul stirrer, Gallagher is leagues ahead of blowhards like David Hasselhoff and Don Johnson who misguidedly think they were singers. 7 Days in Memphis is a pleasant homage to the birthplace of soul but the actor should be mindful to keep his day job.
