I can't help be reminded of the first four
Billy Joel albums when I listened to this newcomer's debut disc.
It is full of uplifting piano-dominated ballads, and the lyrics
are resonant and identifiable. Chariot is a very soulful
album, and DeGraw draws in the likes of Joel, Elton John, and
Jeff Buckley in his expressive vocals. With the crystal clear
sound of the piano accompanied string arrangements, Chariot
contains some heartfelt pop music like on the opening, attention
grabber "Follow Through," then to "Over-Rated,"
"Just Friends," and the wonderful "More Than Anyone."
The purity of the songs and the music ensures a sort of timeless
quality like all of the previous greats. Ten years from now,
this record can be played and still sound and feel relevant.
The singer/songwriter genre has found in DeGraw its new star
for this decade.
