Perry had attempted the solo route before-remember
the Joe Perry Project during Aerosmith's fallow days? Drawing
a blank? Thought so. His voice is limited compared to his partner
in crime Steven Tyler's, but the attitude and ripping guitar
are there, and that what counts on this eponymous album. Perry
goes in blazing with the smokestack lightning of the opener "Shakin'
My Cage" and the rest draws on the heavy bluesy Stones-influenced
rock he forged in Aerosmith such as "Can't Compare"
and boogie-tinged instrumental "Mercy" (He even goes
a little mystical on the arabesque "Pray for Me" and
a decent remake of the Doors' "Crystal Ship"). At least
Perry's solo stint isn't about endless jamming and experimentation-the
songs here sound focused while still showing his excellent chops.
Aerosmith fans won't feel like their skipping a beat 'til the
next album.
