Smokey
Robinson and the Miracles
Ooh Baby Baby/Anthology
Motown/Universal
by David Chiu |
Like the other classic Motown groups, Smokey
Robinson and the Miracles represented soul music royalty. Their
chart history is unparalleled and needs no further explanation.
But more importantly, the Miracles were a showcase for Robinson's
romantic, silky smooth voice and his uncanny ability of writing
hit songs. Here is the proof in this compilation: "Going
to a Go Go," "Shop Around," "You've Really
Got a Hold On Me," "Ooh Baby Baby," "The
Tracks of My Tears," "I Second that Emotion, and "The
Tears of a Clown." Even the minor hits such as "Abraham,
Martin, and John" (famous for being performed by Dion).
"The Love I Saw In You Was Just a Mirage," "Whatever
Makes You Happy" display a sensitivity and insight furthered
by the group's wondrous harmonies and soul. When your material
has been covered by by the likes of the Beatles and Linda Ronstadt,
being praised by Bob Dylan, and having been named checked in
a song by ABC, you know you've done something special and Robinson
and Miracles have done that exponentially.
