As he had done for Johnny Cash, producer Rick Rubin brings the best out of Neil Diamond, the Jewish Elvis. For those who were put off by Diamond's bombast and glitz will hear on 12 Songs a thoughtful singer and songwriter" The songs on the album are really reflective stark in tone in which the emphasis is on Diamond's distinctive vocals, dominant guitar playing, and sometimes confessional lyrics ("Oh Mary," "Evermore"). "Save Me Saturday Night" recalls back to the pop hits that fits alongside perfectly with "Cherry Cherry." "Song Sung Blue," and "Sweet Caroline." The additional instrumentation such as strings adds atmosphere and feeling that befits Diamond's grandiose style but nothing overbearing. Still he hasn't lost that sense of chutzpah and hubris on the life-affirming "Hell Yeah," a defiant song of survival. It could almost be his theme song. 12 Songs is the best thing that Diamond has done since his '60s prime.
