Doves
The Last Broadcast
Capitol
By David Chiu

Riding the wave of Brit alt rock that brought us Coldplay, Radiohead, and Travis, Doves delivers quiet/bombastic music full of atmosphere leading to some jarring, emotional results. Coming off from similar musical horizons touched on their first record, Doves lay down some densely-packed sounds that recall early King Crimson (ironically a song on the album "M62" is an adaptation of Crimson's "Moonchild"). Although atmosphere (i.e. swirling guitars) is the band's calling card, there are some buoyant moments like on "Words," "There Goes the Fear," the rocking "NY," and the exciting "Pounding." A little ambitious use of Beatles-inspired arrangements add to this musical journey where for once it's pleasurable to be lost without direction.
