Earth Wind and Fire
The Essential Earth Wind and Fire
Columbia/Legacy
By David Chiu

Only Parliament/Funkadelic could rival them in terms of popularity and artistic importance, but in the '70s Earth Wind and Fire were definitely the preeminent funk band. EWF captivated listeners with their spiritually-minded songs and captivating live performances. I don't think this band has ever wrote or sang anything that could come even close to being salacious or negative, a tribute to the humanity and vision of leader Maurice White. The Essential is exactly that, the best of EWF and contains all the signature songs: "Mighty Mighty," the funky "Shining Star." "That's The Way of the World." "Sing a Song," "Getaway," "Can't hide Love," "September," "Fantasy," the awesome ballad "After the Love is Gone," the disco work out of "Boogie Wonderland" with the emotions, and the electro-funk of "Let's Groove." And that's only a portion of what makes up this 2-CD collection that only displays White's genius, but a talented band including reliable bassist Verdine White and the sweet falsetto voice of Phillip Bailey. No soul collection is really complete without something by these guys, and Essential fits the bill.
