Julia Fordham
Concrete Love
Vanguard
By David Chiu

Julia Fordham's lost none of her jazzy-soul touch on her latest in five years. Concrete Love is a cool-blue work of sensuous, exquisite love and aching songs, which is nothing new to those familiar with the British chanteuse's body of work. It is no coincidence that the producer for this album is bassist Larry Klein, best known as Joni Mitchell's collaborator especially on her jazzy excursions (ironically Fordham's alto is strikingly similar to that of Ms. Mitchell's). the result is something utterly romantic and personal (the travelogue of "Italy," the introspective "Something Right," the lush "Love," the upbeat and endearing "Wake Up With You"). Fordham's voice is just amazing, sweeping in one instance, and guarded and stately the next. Her new album demonstrate that the power of love and emotion have no boundaries.
