Peter Gabriel
Plays Live: Highlights
Geffen/Universal
By David Chiu

Peter Gabriel has been known for being a meticulous musician in the studio but as a live performer he is on a level on his own. Showman only provides a brief description of what the man was like on stage as he gestured with his mike set around his head. It comes as no surprise since his honed his stage skills when he was with Genesis. Plays Live: highlights, an abbreviated version of the original 2-CD set, provides some evidence of what Gabriel was like as a solo performer back in 1982. This set draws from his first four solo records, recreating the sometimes haunting, complex moments of songs such as Family Snapshot, "No Self Control," and "I Don't Remember" while delivering some poignant songs as in "Solsbury Hill" and the anthemic closer "Biko." The live tracks may lack the nuances of the originals but not the intensity. Those not privileged to see the man live will find these highlights the next best thing.
