Daryl Hall and John Oates
VH-1 Behind the Music Collection

By David Chiu

Few white artists can evoke the authentic feeling of black American soul music and maintain a steady run at the pop charts as does Daryl Hall and John Oates. Their 30 year career is celebrated on this fine if not incomplete overview of their career sampling their best work in each of the last decades with the elegant "Sara Smile," through the dance pop of "I Can't Go" for That," "Maneater" "Say It Isn't So", and Out of Touch, to the back-to-basics of" So Close" and the newly-recorded "Do It for Love." Augmented by live versions of She's Gone, "Everytime You Go Away," and "Kiss On My List" this Behind the Music collection proves the how electrifying chemistry was (and still is) between these disciples of soul. The Very Best Of, an earlier collection released in 2001, offers more bang and hits compared to this collection, but still does an amount of justice of how soulful these guys really were.
