Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, and Roy Hargrove
Directions in Music: Live at Massey Hall
Verve
By David Chiu

Leave it to these elite professionals to channel the spirits of Miles and Trane. This live recording features pianist (and Davis alumn) Hancock, saxophonist Brecker, and trumpeter Roy Hargrove paying tribute masters by interpreting/reinterpreting their famous works. The approach is as bold and innovative as the original compositions themselves. Hancock revisits with a new version "The Sorcerer," which originally appeared on the Davis album of the same name; Brecker does a masterful rendition of Trane's "Naima" unaccompanied; and all three work it on the medley of "So What/Impressions." Each of the principals shine with their breathtaking playing and even some of the new compositions like "D Trane" and "Messtery" sound like something the greats would have written and performed.
