Oasis
Heathen Chemistry
Epic
By David Chiu

Though they may never scale the heights of their Definitely Maybe/Morning Glory salad days, Oasis is still soldiering on nearly a decade later as Brit pop is being dominated by Coldplay and Doves. Perhaps what accounts for this latest album's somewhat winning quality is that the Beatles-influences seem less obvious, revealing Oasis' own identity and strengths as a ballsy, melodic rock and roll band. Heathen Chemistry thus sounds more earthier containing some upbeat, tuneful rockers like "Force of Nature," the Who-esque "Hung in a Bad Place," and "Hindu Times." You can take away guitarist Noel Gallagher's gift for hooks and melody as indicated on the lush "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," the folky "She is Real," and the ethereal "Born on a Different Cloud." Heathen Chemistry shows that even when the Brothers Gallagher are not at each other's throats, they seem unified for the best without losing the edge.
