Rush

After a five-year absence, during that time included personal tragedy, the Canadian power trio Rush rock harder on this new album than ever before. Certainly the emphasis here are more of the guitar, bass, and drums sound than the keyboards which dominated Rush's work in the late '80s and early '80s. The result: a bolder and heavier sound that should enthrall the most faithful of fans. Adrenaline-fueled tracks in "Peaceable Kingdom" and "One Little Victory" set the pace of this rawer-sounding album, and even the melodic midtempo songs like "Ghost Rider" sounds energized; Alex Lifeson's guitar never sounded any better than here, Geddy Lee's high-pitched voice and kerplunking bass lines hasn't lost a step; neither has Neil Peart's adroit drumming and penetrating, arty lyrics. Creatively and musically, this is Rush's finest in the new decade.
