Supertramp
Breakfast in America
A&M/Universal
By David Chiu

The mere mention of this band's name today might draw laughs and scorn but at the time of this album's release, these British prog/pop rockers finally hit the big time. You couldn't escape from the popularity of Breakfast in America in 1979, which spent six weeks at No. 1 on the charts. For all the ribbing this band gets, there is still an irresistible charm to tracks like the whimsical satire on the educational system in "The Logical Song," the bluesy "Goodbye Stranger," the rollicking "Take the Long Way Home," and the sunny pop of the title track. Rick Davies' keyboard work added to the festive atmosphere while Roger Hodgeson's girlish vocals gave the band's identifiable sound. Breakfast in America was English pop at its finest, much to the dismay of cynics (postscript: you gotta dig the cover art, which is funny if not ironically nostalgic).
