Teena Marie
Super Hits
Epic/Legacy
By David Chiu

Having been mentored by Rick James during her stint at Motown, Teena Marie emerged as her own artist when she sighed with Epic in the early '80s. Blessed with an awesome voice and indomitable spirit, Lady Tee was the female equivalent to mentor James and Prince: a singer, writer, producer, and arranger who incorporated elements of rock, pop, funk, and soul into her sound. Love and soul were her calling cards and they are characteristics quite pronounced on this budget collection, showing that her Epic tenure was fruitful: "Ooh La La," "If I Were a Bell," the loving tribute to the Prince of Motown "My Dear Mr. Gaye," and her biggest hit to date "Lovergirl." There is no question that Teena Marie was the high priestess of erotic soul music.
