Mary Timony
Golden Dove
Matador
By David Chiu

Eccentric would be an apt description of the Helium singer's latest album. A cross between noisy indie pop and folk, The Golden Dove contains some impressionistic, whimsical lyrics and ornate arrangements. You can't help feel but the Gothic aura and shades of William Blake on tracks like "he Mirror," "Magic Power," the folky "Look a Ghost in the Eye", and the ethereal "The Owl's Escape." Despite the songs' weird quality, the arrangements recall baroque and Pet Sounds, and Timony's breathy, sometimes deadpan voice shows she means carries no trace of irony-she means well here. If you are willing to take a risk and open your mind, The Golden Dove can make for an arresting listen.
