Wyclef Jean
Masquerade
Columbia
By David Chiu

The ex-Fugee returns with another hard-hitting rhyme set, espousing everything about life in the projects, players, thrills, and the painful experiences of growing up in the street culture. With vocal assists from other rappers, Wyclef lays down his rhymes with conviction, passion, and wit: the biting "PJs," the emotional pan in "80 Bars," the dramatic bragging "Masquerade," etc. Wyclef reveals a playful, romantic side on "Pussycat," his take on Tom Jones' What's New Pussycat and the gentle "Two Wrongs," a duet with Claudia Ortiz. The most poignant track here is "Daddy," a tribute to his late father, and the plea for peace doesn't go unnoticed on the reggae "War No More." Everything here on Masquerade explores Wyclef's search for meaning in a rough world, a journey that the Refugee All Star is not afraid to take.
