Moonage Daydream: The Life and Times of Ziggy Stardust

Review by David Chiu

As alter ego Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie recorded some of the greatest songs of his career that represented the apex of glam rock. But it was really the look that cemented his success: the wild red hair, androgynous looking make-up, sci-fi costumes, and this sexy, flamboyant stage presence. What might have seemed like a by gone era is now back in this exquisitely designed photography book that celebrates the 30th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, with pictures by legendary photographer Mick Rock with text by David Bowie.

Consisting of over 600 photos, about 300 of them in color, Moonage Daydream is a inside portrait of Ziggymania from his gestation period to full blow sensation. This signed (by both Bowie and Rock), limited edition book (relegated to only 2,500 copies) shows Ziggy in action through his successful European and American tours, including the final show where he declared Ziggy is no more. There are also photos of Bowie being applied the makeup as well as shots of him with the music pioneers of the time including Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Mick Jagger. With these exciting photos taken by the always signature Rock (whose credits include Queen, the subject of a later book by Genesis Publications), rock and roll never looked so grandiose.

Bowie also provides some insightful commentary and feelings about his messianic alter ego, that really shows the purpose on why he created him with post-modern artistic intentions within a musical context: 'Writers like George Steiner had nailed the sexy term post-culture and it seemed a jolly good idea to join up the dots for rock. The main platform would be, other than shoes, 'we are the future, now.' and the one way of celebrating that was to create it by the only means at our disposal. With, of course, a rock'n'roll band.'

As with any product furnished by Genesis Publications, this book is as larger than life as Ziggy himself-meticulously designed and lovingly assembled. The glamorous approach to the making of this book only seems fitting in its tribute of a unforgettable moment in rock and roll and of a pioneering artist that caused a sensation.
