Is it premature for the Red Hots to release
a greatest hits album when they are still popular amongst the
alternative rock crowd? Hard for the younger crowd to believe,
but they have been around for a long time, so a hits collection
is somewhat overdue from them. Naturally this collection delivers,
obviously key cuts from their enormously popular albums Blood
Sugar Sex Magik: ("Under the Bridge" and "Give
It Away") and Californication (the title track and
"Scar Tissue"). Contributing to the funk and punk are
their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground," "Suck
My Kiss," and "By the Way." Most acts release
greatest hits records when they are breaking up or don't have
much left in the tank; for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, this set
might be the end of one phase and the beginning of another.
