Sly & the Family Stone was the most
important band of their time. This late '60s outfit led by the
brilliant and uber cool Sly Stone paved the way for the emergence
of funk groups of the '70s, made Motown reevaluate their stylish
pop sound, steered Miles Davis to embrace funk in his jazz, and
gave birth to disco by the end of the decade. Aside from the
mind-blowing rhythmic playing, this multiracial band also infused
a hippie idealism until it grew militant in addressing social
issues of the time. This package does the Stone legacy proud
collecting the classic works: the headbanging booty shaker "Dance
to Music," the uplifting "Everyday People," "Don't
Call Me Nigger, Whitey," the nostalgic "Hot Fun in
the Summertime," Thank You Fallettinme Be Mice Elf Agin,"
and "Everybody is a Star," "Family Affair,"
and the defiant "Stand!" (proving that they were a
band with a social conscience). Things wouldn't be the same as
we progress through the end of Disc 2, but no matter; those aforementioned
songs in this new package adds up to one continuous scintillating
killer groove.
