I don't know what's more surprising: that
this album was reissued or the fact that Spandau Ballet has a
website. Though not exactly the most photogenic of the New Romantics
like Duran Duran and Culture Club (or had many hits in the US),
Spandau Ballet were cut from the same cloth of fashion-concious
Brit pop bands of the early '80s. Their earlier disco-influenced
pop had a detached chill but on True, the band finally
mellow out and reveal a flair for soul. Tracks like the celebratory
"Communication" and the drama of "Gold" still
resonate, and even lesser known tunes like "Foundation"
and "Pleasure" convey some momentary charms. The best
song on the record of course is "True," the New Wave
equivalent to a pop standard, and has grown in stature over the
years (it was later famously sampled by PM Dawn in 1991). True,
Spandau's best and strongest album, may not be on
the pantheon of classic albums, but it brings back memories of
the big-hair/skinny tie generation just fine.
